Learn 5 Cards, the Least Count game, for 2–6 players: count your hand, drop pairs and runs, pick from the last drop and Call when you are lowest. Try a worked example, then play in your browser.

Count a hand, drop a set, judge a Call

A♠3♥4♣10♦Q♠

Sevens are the Round Joker. The hand A♠ 3♥ 4♣ 10♦ Q♠ counts 1 + 3 + 4 + 10 + 10 = 28: it holds no sevens, so no jokers. A pair such as 5♠ 5♥ or a run such as 8♦ 9♦ 10♦ drops in one turn, but a lone card cannot ride along with a set. Call only when your count is strictly the lowest at the table.

Worked example
SituationResult
A♠ 3♥ 4♣ 10♦ Q♠ (sevens wild)28 points
5♠ 5♥A pair: droppable together
8♦ 9♦ 10♦A run: droppable together
5♠ 5♥ + K♦Not allowed: a lone card cannot ride with a set
Call on 8 vs 14, 11, 21Good Call: caller 0, others score their hands
Call on 12 vs 15, 12, 20Wrong Call: caller +50, others 0

Ace is low only: A-2-3 is a run, Q-K-A is not. Jokers — printed or the Round Joker rank — count 0; a run takes one joker at most, and a set needs two natural cards.

🎯 Objective

Keep the points in your hand low. When you think you hold the lowest hand at the table, Call to end the round: a good Call scores you nothing and everyone else the points in their hand.

🃏 5 Cards Setup & Rules

  1. 2 to 6 players. Up to 5 play with one deck and its two jokers; 6 play with two decks.
  2. Every round one rank from Ace to King is drawn at random: all four suits of that rank are jokers for the round — the Round Joker — worth nothing, alongside the printed jokers.
  3. Everyone gets 5 cards. One card is turned face up to open the pile; the rest form the face-down draw pile.
  4. The dealer plays first, and the deal moves round the table each round.

▶ How to Play 5 Cards

  1. First DROP one card, or cards that make a set: a pair, three or four of a kind, or a run of three or more in one suit. Ace is low only — A-2-3 is a run, Q-K-A is not, and K-A-2 does not wrap.
  2. A run takes one joker at most, filling a gap or lengthening an end. A same-rank set needs two natural cards — 8♣ + joker is not a pair, but 8♣ 8♥ + joker is three of a kind — and may not hold two natural cards of the same suit.
  3. You can drop several sets at once, but a lone card cannot ride along with a set.
  4. Then pick exactly one card: DRAW the top of the draw pile, or TAKE any one card from the previous player's latest drop. Earlier drops are out of reach, and the rest of that drop is buried.
  5. Instead of dropping — before you drop anything — you may CALL: the round ends at once and every hand is shown.
  6. When the draw pile is empty, the buried cards are shuffled into a new draw pile; the latest drop stays open.

5 Cards, also called Least Count, is a quick game where the lowest hand wins. Here it is in the Vanikar app. Two to six players can play. Add computer players, then choose Knockout, where a total of two hundred puts you out, or League, which plays a set number of rounds. Start, and deal. Everyone gets five cards. One card is turned face up to open the pile, and one rank is drawn as the Round Joker. Ace counts one, number cards count their face value, and Jack, Queen and King count ten. Jokers, and every card of the Round Joker's rank, count nothing. On your turn, first drop one card, or a set: a pair, three or four of a kind, or a run of three or more in one suit. Then pick one card: the top of the draw pile, or any one card from the previous player's drop. Throw away your high cards, keep the low ones, and hold on to your jokers. Watch what the others drop and pick up. The next player can take from your drop, too. A run can use one joker to fill a gap. A pair or a set needs two real cards, but a joker can join them. When you think your hand is the lowest at the table, Call, instead of dropping. Every hand is shown. If yours is strictly the lowest, you score nothing, and everyone else adds the points in their hand. If anyone ties or beats you, you add fifty. In Knockout, reaching two hundred puts you out, and the last player standing wins. In League, the lowest total after the last round wins. 📖 Detailed Guide

Setting up your table

  • From the game menu choose 5 Cards, then pick 2–6 seats and fill the empty ones with AI players.
  • Choose the format. Knockout, the default, puts a player out once their total reaches the threshold — 200 by default — and the last player standing wins. League keeps everyone in for the agreed number of rounds, 10 by default, and the lowest total wins.
  • Up to 5 players use one deck and its two jokers; 6 players use two decks.
  • Every round one rank from Ace to King is drawn at random: all four suits of that rank are jokers for the round — the Round Joker — worth nothing, alongside the printed jokers.
  • Everyone gets 5 cards. One card is turned face up to open the pile, the rest form the draw pile, and the dealer plays first. The deal moves round the table each round.

Counting your hand

  • Ace counts 1, number cards their face value, and Jack, Queen and King 10 each.
  • Jokers — printed, or any card of the Round Joker rank — count 0.
  • With sevens as the Round Joker, A♠ 3♥ 4♣ 10♦ Q♠ is worth 1 + 3 + 4 + 10 + 10 = 28. With threes as the Round Joker, A♠ 3♥ 5♦ 🃏 is worth 1 + 0 + 5 + 0 = 6.
  • Low is good. The whole game is about getting this number down before someone Calls.

Your turn: drop, then pick

  • First drop one card, or cards that make a set: a pair, three or four of a kind, or a run of three or more in one suit.
  • Ace is low only: A-2-3 is a run, Q-K-A is not, and K-A-2 does not wrap round.
  • A run takes one joker at most, filling a gap or lengthening an end. A same-rank set needs two natural cards — 8♣ + joker is not a pair, but 8♣ 8♥ + joker is three of a kind — and may not hold two natural cards of the same suit.
  • You can drop several sets at once, but a lone card cannot ride along with a set.
  • Then pick exactly one card: Draw the top of the draw pile, or Take any one card from the previous player's latest drop. Earlier drops are out of reach, and the rest of that drop is buried.
  • When the draw pile runs out, the buried cards are shuffled into a new draw pile; the latest drop stays open.

Calling

  • Instead of dropping — before you drop anything — you may Call. The round ends at once and every hand is shown.
  • Good Call: if your hand is strictly the lowest, you score 0 and everyone else adds the points in their hand.
  • Wrong Call: if anyone else has the same points or fewer, you add 50 and everyone else scores 0.
  • A Call is a bet against the whole table, not just the player before you — one hand equal to yours anywhere is enough to make it wrong.

Knockout and League

  • Knockout, the default: a player whose total reaches the threshold — 200 by default — is out. The last player standing wins.
  • League: nobody is out. After the agreed number of rounds, 10 by default, the lowest total wins, and a tie is shared.
  • In Knockout a wrong Call at 50 takes you a quarter of the way out in a single round; in League it is a bad round you can still recover from.

📊 5 Cards Scoring

Ace 1, number cards face value, Jack, Queen and King 10 each, jokers — printed or the Round Joker rank — 0. Good Call: if the caller's hand is strictly the lowest, the caller scores 0 and everyone else adds the points in their hand. Wrong Call: if anyone else has the same points or fewer, the caller adds 50 and everyone else scores 0. Knockout, the default: a player whose total reaches the threshold — 200 by default — is out, and the last player standing wins. League: nobody is out; after the agreed number of rounds, 10 by default, the lowest total wins, and a tie is shared.
