How to Play Gin Rummy

Knock before they do.

👥 2 players · Medium difficulty

Learn two-player Gin Rummy: melds, deadwood, knocking and undercuts. Count a ten-card example and practise deciding when to knock.

Count deadwood before you knock

3♣3♦3♥4♠5♠6♠7♠A♣2♦4♥

The three threes form a set; 4♠–7♠ form a run. Only A♣, 2♦ and 4♥ remain unmatched: 7 deadwood points. You may knock after discarding, but your opponent can still undercut you.

Worked example
SituationResult
A♣ + 2♦ + 4♥7
Opponent has 12 after laying offYou score 5
Opponent has 5 after laying offOpponent scores 27

The undercut example includes Vanikar’s 25-point bonus. Gin requires zero deadwood and prevents your opponent from laying off.

🎯 Objective

Reach 100 points first by reducing deadwood to 10 or fewer to knock, or to 0 for Gin.

🃏 Gin Rummy Setup & Rules

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck. Aces are low. Deal 10 cards each.
  2. Flip one card face-up (discard pile start); rest is the stock.
  3. The non-dealer takes the first turn like any other: draw from the stock or take the face-up card, then discard.

▶ How to Play Gin Rummy

  1. On your turn, draw from stock or top of discard. Then discard one card.
  2. A meld is a set (3–4 same rank) or run (3+ consecutive same suit).
  3. Knock by discarding face-down when your unmatched cards total ≤ 10.
  4. After a knock, both hands are revealed; the app lays off any of the opponent's cards that fit your melds and scores the hand at once.
  5. Gin: knock with 0 deadwood — opponent cannot lay off.

📖 Detailed Guide

Setting up the game

  • Gin Rummy is heads-up: you against one opponent, racing to 100 points across multiple hands.
  • Each player gets 10 cards. One card is flipped face-up to start the discard pile; the rest sit face-down as the stock with a live counter ("Draw: 31").
  • The non-dealer takes the first turn like any other: draw from the stock or take the face-up card, then discard. You may not discard the card you just took from the discard pile.

Arranging your hand

  • Use the sort bar at the bottom to instantly arrange your hand: by suit (C D H S) or by rank (A→2), then confirm with the check mark.
  • Group toward melds: a SET is 3–4 cards of the same rank; a RUN is 3+ consecutive cards of the same suit (Aces are low).
  • Everything not in a meld is "deadwood," counted at face value (face cards 10, Ace 1). Your whole game is about shrinking that number.

Draw, then discard

  • Each turn has exactly two actions: draw one card (from the stock or the top of the discard pile), then discard one card face-up.
  • Taking from the discard pile telegraphs what you're collecting — sometimes drawing blind from stock is worth the privacy.
  • Watch what your opponent picks up and never feed the cards they want.

Knocking, Gin, and scoring

  • When your deadwood totals 10 or less you may knock: tap Knock to discard face-down and reveal your melds.
  • The app then lays off automatically any of your opponent's cards that fit YOUR melds, shrinking their deadwood, and the difference in deadwood goes to the knocker.
  • If the opponent's final deadwood is equal or lower, they "undercut" you: they score the difference plus a 25-point bonus.
  • GIN — tap Gin! when your deadwood is zero — earns a 25-point bonus and blocks all layoffs.
  • Hands repeat until someone reaches 100 points; the higher total then wins. The loser of a hand takes the first turn of the next one. If the stock runs out, the hand is a draw and nobody scores.

📊 Gin Rummy Scoring

Knocker wins the difference in deadwood. Undercut: the opponent wins the difference plus 25. Gin: 25 plus the opponent's full deadwood. First to 100 wins.

❓ Gin Rummy — Frequently Asked Questions

When can you knock in Gin Rummy?

After drawing, when the cards in your hand that are not in a set or run add up to 10 or fewer. Discard, lay down your melds, and your opponent lays off what fits on them before deadwood is counted.
